Background of the Study
Political violence, manifesting through intimidation, conflict, and other coercive measures, poses a serious threat to democratic processes, particularly during local elections. In Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, episodes of political violence have been reported to directly affect voter turnout and the overall credibility of electoral processes. Such violence creates an atmosphere of fear and distrust, deterring citizens from exercising their electoral rights (Ade, 2023). Scholars have noted that political violence not only disrupts the democratic process but also weakens the institutional integrity of local government (Okafor, 2024). Recent research indicates that security concerns and aggressive political tactics significantly reduce voter participation and undermine public confidence in elections (Chukwu, 2025). This study examines the correlation between political violence and voter turnout in Ikorodu, exploring how violent incidents influence electoral engagement and shape political behavior. It aims to provide an evidence-based analysis of the challenges posed by political violence and to propose interventions that could help safeguard democratic practices at the local level.
Statement of the Problem
In Ikorodu, political violence has emerged as a critical impediment to democratic participation. Recurrent violent incidents during local elections have discouraged voter turnout and compromised the integrity of the electoral process. The pervasive fear resulting from such violence undermines public trust in local government and creates an environment of political instability. This study seeks to identify the extent to which political violence influences voter behavior and to understand the underlying factors that perpetuate such violence, thereby offering recommendations to enhance electoral security and participation (Ade, 2023; Okafor, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To investigate the incidence of political violence during local elections in Ikorodu.
To analyze the relationship between political violence and voter turnout.
To recommend measures to reduce violence and improve electoral participation.
Research Questions:
What is the extent of political violence in Ikorodu during elections?
How does political violence impact voter turnout?
What strategies can mitigate the effects of political violence on electoral participation?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Political violence significantly reduces voter turnout in Ikorodu.
H2: There is a negative relationship between incidents of political violence and electoral participation.
H3: Implementing effective security measures can improve voter turnout.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the detrimental effects of political violence on electoral participation in Ikorodu. The findings will help policymakers and security agencies to design targeted interventions that ensure safer, more inclusive electoral processes. By addressing the root causes of political violence, the research aims to bolster democratic participation and reinforce local governance (Ade, 2023; Chukwu, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of political violence on voter turnout in Ikorodu Local Government Area, with a focus on local election dynamics and security measures.
Definitions of Terms:
Political Violence: The use of force or intimidation to influence political outcomes.
Voter Turnout: The proportion of eligible voters who participate in an election.
Electoral Integrity: The adherence to principles of fairness and transparency in the electoral process.
